The Romanian entry is called Playing with fire. It features Paula Seling and Ovi, who actually also now lives in Norway. The stage for Romania starts off as blue with green spots during the verses and flame coloured for the choruses. The couple have their double piano on stage, and they say at each end until the last repeat of the chorus. There are four female backing singers on the left, all in black dresses. Paula is wearing a black PVC cat suit, and Ovi a leather jacket and jeans. Well suited to the song title Romania uses pyrotechnics for this number, event the piano is on fire and is filmed from below!
Ovi and Paula have rehearsed their number to a slick performance, where they seem to get their chemistry right as well as delivering a faultless vocal performance.

Allkindsofeverything.ie

Pete:
The set is blue and they have the transparent piano on stage , along with 4 female backing singers. The set changes to gold for the chorus, then back to blue. Both stand up and move to the front of the stage after Paula’s operatic part of the song.

Vocally, this is very good from both of them, my only issue is that they should seem to interact more with each other. There is a definite lack of chemistry between them and this needs to improve.
Also, the camerawork also needs improving , the set is quite busy with backing singers hand movements etc and a lot of this is getting lost on screen.

Keith:
The routine is the same as before but much better visually and vocally. There is better interplay between Paula and Ovi and while the camera (quite rightfully) focusses more on here, they are both in good form. Paula delivers the semi-operatic cresendo everytime and maybe there are too many long shots on screen, but otherwise this is sailing into the Top 10 in both the semi and even in the final, with the right draw.

Andrew:
Romania were up next and we have the perspex double piano which lights up and provides a lovely
pyro moment as well. Vocally this was pretty faultless, Paula Seling hitting those high notes so well
and so early in the morning was true class. This for me is a bigger dark horse for winning the whole thing.

Fotis
Spectacular blue lights, three female backing vocals who dance and sing, and Paula with Ovi give a very good performance. They use the double piano as we saw in the Romanian national final. Powerful vocals by Paula and impressive dance spirit plunders the entire arena. Indeed a good song which is doing not well in the polls but there are strong possibilities to make something big in the final, in which it will proceed.

Eva
Too good for Eurovision, and I mean that this song, last year would do much better in the scoreboard. The juries are used to snub these types of songs. I cannot see anything negative to this performance as the positive energy and the dance mood created, boost this song in my eyes.

The Dutch entry for Eurovision in 2010 is called Ik ben verliefd is sung by young Sieneke. For this number the stage is lit in all the colours of the rainbow and a very prominent prop has been placed on the stage: a model of a traditional Dutch street organ. Three backing singers are placed on the right of the stage and two further people are taking the role of barrel organ puppets.

This joyful number brings a lot of colour to the second semi-final and Sieneke gives a perfect vocal performance of this song you can’t help to sing along to.

Allkindsofeverything.ie
Pete:

Her vocal run through was excellent. She is joined on stage by 3 female backing singers, and a huge organ, on which there are 2 people , a man with a drum and a woman with a stick and a bell. I think they are meant to represent wooden dolls. The organ is illuminated and the stage colour is golden, while the backdrop is mulitcoloured, yellow , red, green.

The song starts with a close up of the 2 ‘dolls’ on the organ twirling slowly around before moving to Sieneke. Vocally, there are no problems but camera shots need work, as Sieneke looks a little lost on stage. I think we need more closeup shots of her. This improved as the reheasal progressed but I still think they need improving.

A good start to the rehearsal day. I think Netherlands should be happy with their first rehearsal.

Keith:

Sieneke and her entourage of three backing singers, a man and a woman pretending to play toy instrumentals and a giant barrel organ are using some of the best lighting effects of the week, loads of orange and green transforming into rainbow ccolours. Sieneke finally looks like she’s enjoying herself and is actually selling the song. It’s fun, it’s instant, but will it travel well to juries and Eastern Europe. Bar a few choreography changes (I’d have Sieneke appearing from behind the organ and later leading a “parade” of singers for the chorus) this is as good as it can get but I don’t see this qualifying. Neither would I totally rule it out.

Andrew:

This is great fun and makes me smile from ear to ear.

We have the organ , we have the backing singer and we have two dancers who act as doll by the organ.

Great vocals and they had a good rehearsal.

Oikotimes.com

Fotis:

Folklore prop for Sieneke and this song is definitely waking you up. It’s your morning alarm. Vocally Sieneke (who’s dressed simply) is OK not that the song needs something special in terms of voice. But there is nothing special, nothing impressive.

Eva:

So far I though Finland will be the null points country this year. Now I am struggling with this one. This is totally wrong choice for the Netherlands. The camera work cannot even help this song and performance. The only good is the lights of the stage which are like a circus, meaning that’s exactly what this entry deserves.

Albanien leverer noget af et genreskift med up-tempo sangen Its all about you.

Portugal.

The Azerbaijani entry has created a feeling of underwater setting on the stage via a netting hung in the backdrop creating a murky foggy backdrop and with some dark green colours implying seaweed. There are three podiums with steps on the stage. The four female backing singer-dancers are on top of one and Safura herself on top of the other one. The steps light up as Safura descends off her podium. There are also some images of water drop images projected to Safura’s podium. The ladies meet in the middle of the stage for some dance moves and the four ladies then rise to the podium vacated by Safura. A bare-chested man also joins Safura for some dance moves, she then walks up and down the catwalk and returns to finish her song on the stage.
Safura was today seen in a short black dress and the backing singers in similar silver ones. Other outfits are planned however for next rehearsal. The Azeri team makes very good use of all the facilities available on the stage here and Safura has now trained her voice to suit this song to maximum effect and sings it effortlessly. Drip drop should easily live up to the pre-contest hype and place well with this modern pop song with r’n’b elements.

Allkindsofeverything.ie

PETE:
I was wary of how Safura’s vocals would sound but they were great so no worries for her there.
Overall, this was a great rehearsal. Azerbaijan is definitely a contender for this year, though it is not , in my opinion, a definite winner.

KEITH:
Things got a little tricky for Safura’s rehearsal as we lost power in the Press Working Area… Vocally Safura is fine, her backing vocalists are great but there’s something missing here. A little more work may turn it from a guaranteed finialist into a serious contender to win.

Oikotimes.com

FOTIS
Safura gives her first performance in a spectacular set up. She comes down from a staircase with lighted steps and led monitors aside. Four female backing vocalists are also coming down from another staircase and a male dancer interacts the the singer and her friends. Vocally there are no problems. The stage presentation is dramatic, suitable for the song.

EVA
NRK decided to use no led monitors this year and Azerbaijan made sure we don’t miss it. Totally theatrical at some points it got too much but after all this country shows they want the trophy badly.

In the beginning the stage is very subdued with the edge of the stage lit in red and some red spots in the back wall. Anna starts off with her trademark guitar, and her five backing singers that the viewers can’t see close up at all, take their place on the red edge of the stage behind Anna and their white suits reflect the red. At the climax of the song the lights turn to blue and white in an effective display in a change of mood. She will be wearing a peach coloured frock. Today she also has a sequinned black waistcoat on top the dress according to her quirky dress sense. Also she wears a tiara with pearls on her head. Added to this the audience in the arena will be given light staffs to go with this performance.
This only slightly re-worked performance from Melodifestivalen is functioning well in Oslo as well and Anna works brilliantly with the camera catching all the right angles. When you add to this Anna’s perfect but raspy vocals Sweden should not struggle to qualify for the final.

Allkindsofeverything.ie

PETE:
Anna’s vocals were excellent. A simple presentation of a simple song.

KEITH:
I had this down as the surprise non-qualifer from semi two, but baseed on what we just saw, this is sailing into the final. The red stage is very eye-catching and while I don’t like the trick of the disappearing guitar, I’m getting used to it. The backing choir who stand on the back edge of the stage really add something to this that the taped backing vocal in the Swedish final. The big difference is Anna Bergendahl. He looks a lot more relaxed and far more animated and really has a powerful connection with camera. The performance is sweet and I think that Sweden is another guaranteed finalist.

Oikotimes.com

FOTIS
What we have seen in the Melodifestivalen is what we see on Telenor Arena stage by Anna. The stage colors are dark and red. The song is going to be the most spectacular along with the Danish one, in terms of camera work. The NRK team is also going to focus (like in 2010 MF) in the crowd which they hope they will carry some lights. Vocally the song is going smoothly and Anna’s voice is full of passion and sentiment. A pop mid tempo song which for sure will go the final where it will go very high this time.

EVA
The lyrics of this song are so powerful, they can make you cry and understand some true facts about life. I have to dedicate this song to Fotis, despite I should have been reporting about it. This is your time my friend Fotis!

“The stage is decorated now with hanging strings with baubles. We start off in shades of blue, but end up in all shades of gold and orange, blue and green like on a rainbow. Michael at the front is wearing a gold tails coat suit. There are three female backing dancers on the right, also in gold dresses and with strings attached to their hands and used for a routine. A sole male backing singer is also standing further back.
After some of the weaker vocal performances we have heard today it is obvious that Michael von der Heide is an experienced singer who clears even the key changes of this song effortlessly. Switzerland might well be now in the running for a qualification on the basis of his performance.

Allkindsofeverything.ie

PETE:
The song builds really well and he was vocally good. There were a few tuning issues with the backing singers. This also looks very well visually, apart from possibly too much aimless walking by the backing singers.
A very good rehearsal from Switzerland.

KEITH:
If you are to look at the bookies and predictions then Switzerland is a not likely to qualify., but I think we may just have to re-think that. Michael in a new gold suit, three powerful female backing singers and a balalaika player are surrounded by multicoloured light and mini disco balls creating a real treat for the eye. Michael sings well, he has loads of energy and when he smiles it looks like he’s having fun and it really sells the song. This is a tough semi. If it as in the first semi, I’ll be calling this as likely to qualify, but it’s got a tough draw. The good news is that if people want an 80s retro song, the performance walks all over Denmark.

Oikotimes.com

FOTIS
This is the Golden Rain song. Somehow if Sakis Rouvas said that song, it would have been the ultimate disco favorite this year. Though the static performance despite the very good vocals is not helping Switzerland as much as we thought it would. Yellow stage colors help a lot but still there could have been a spectacular show on stage.

EVA
The facial expression and the average face of Michael is definitely not helping this song entry. It is a nice entry from Switzerland but I am afraid that we will see again Swiss entry out of the final

Oslo live – Danmark

“The set is once again dark blue with some turquoise spots. The Danes bring the screen already familiar from their national final performance on the stage and the two main artists start from opposite sides of the opaque wall and meet outside eventually. A nice effect with two screens is used, when each artist is projected on one of the big screens in the hall separately before they meet up and the main camera picks this up. There are four backing singers in a row in the background. The duo is also seen walking to the end of the catwalk of the catwalk, where they are blasted by a wind machine.
The Danes had some very obvious tuning issues with their rehearsal, but it is hard to tell whether it could have been technical as Chanee was seen fiddling with her ear monitor, while N’evergreen missed quite a few notes. It remains to be seen whether this duo find their balance before the semi-final to qualify to the final.”

Allkindsofeverything.ie

KEITH:
When if came to the first vocal run through this was ropier than a boy scout knot-tying competition although it did get marginally better on subsequet performances. There is zero chemistry between the singers which is only emphasised by the screen between them at the start of the song. When Mr. N’Evergreen takes Chanee by the hand to bring her off to catwalk it looks like an older brother leading his baby sister across the road.

PETE:
The vocal runthrough was dreadful! … The main problem here is the vocals. He is the poorer vocal of the two but she seems to be in too low a key as well.
Overall, the presentation was fine but this will sink if the vocals do not improve.

Oikotimes.com

FOTIS
Totally 80s and totally “we love” song. The Danish duo give us a concert performance, making the stage a spectacular show to see on the night of the second semifinal. This is a strong entry and Denmark can actualy win the entire thing. Vocally we are hearing the best of the duo, the camera work is obviously the best and the lights are playing the game of love and music.

EVA
Too much 80s? Those two at least deserve it as they support the song 100%. I am trying to find negative things but even the stage presentation which is based on the fake wall gimmick is working perfect for Denmark. Congratulations!

“For this number the stage is back to a dark background, with forward pointing white spotlights and blue lighting. Harel is standing in the middle, a grand piano is placed on the right hand side and the pianist is also doing backing vocals, and the two additional male backing singers are on the right of Harel.
In these first run-throughs Harel had some problems with some of the big notes of this very strong ballad, but there is no reason to expect him getting it right by Thursday next week as he has already improved today.”

Allkindsofeverything.ie

PETE:
“There is some split screen shots here with Harel and the pianist which looks good. The first couple of performances were actually a bit disappointing as Harel seemed to be struggling at the bridge of the song.”
However , he pulled it around and it definitely improved. It still was not as powerful as I expected it to be, but he could be just holding back. I’ll be interested to see how this is in his second rehearsal.

KEITH:
“This is basically the same performance as in the Israeli selection but on a bigger stage and even more spectacular ligh show. Harel is centre stage and framed at a distance by a pianist and two backing singers. I wanted this to be a lot better. Harel is struggling with the “ho-ho” bridge and keeps his eyes closed for far too many of the close up, making it too intense and not emngaging with the audience. I can see this being Top 5 with juries, but I’m not sure televoters are going to get such a detatched performance. It SHOULD qualify but I’m not certain until I see how the other ballads later in the draw are coming across.”

ANDREW:
“Harel is really a small guy and has the potential to get lost on the big stage.
But with the voice that he has there is simply no chance of that.
Possibly the best male voice of the contest this will surely harvest votes among the juries and potentially from a good number of the public ones too.
Whether it could win has still to be seen.”

Oikotimes.com

FOTIS
“One of the hot favorites in the 2010 Eurovision Song Contest according to the bookies although fan voting and Europrediction still have Israel lower than 5th position. Harel gives his first stage presentation. The stage is full of purple lights and Harel is dressed in casual suit. He is accompanied by a piano and a piano player. The vocal performance is outstanding while the ballad is one of the best this year. Camera work is focusing on the face a lot while the festivalic sentiment is spread all over the venue.”

EVA
“I guess I am of the few who think that this song will just rank high like Israel 2005. A very good vocal performance, very sentimental music and tune but too much after hearing half of the song. It will go to the final for sure. Please get over the ring from the hand!”

Oslo Live – Armenia

“Armenia is represented by Eva Rivas. She sings about Apricot stone, that is a reference to the Armenian national fruit. The stage is coloured in shades of apricot and we also get a big apricot stone prop in the middle of the stage. Some lengths of fabric hang at the back of the stage. A flutist is on the left sitting on a rock playing duduk and there are three backing singers on the right, at first involved in getting water from a well and symbolically watering the stone, before taking their positions behind Eva. A male dancer is doing some routines on the stage. Eventually a tree grows out of the stone.
Eva has a very long dark hair and sings this ode to her motherland with passion, backed by ethnic sounds and rhythms and professional backing singers. The stage clothes will be in apricot colours too.”

Allkindsofeverything.ie:

PETE:
“Her hair is so long, it’s almost down to her knees! ( I’m just jealous, of course lol). I was curious how Eva’s vocals would be and they were excellent.
This really is impressive on stage, the camera shots are excellent, One of the best 1st rehearsals so far this year.
Armenia shoulod be delighted with this”

KEITH:
“…This was exactly what I hoped it could be. Very ethnic staging framed by drapes and some lovely camerawork for the warm stage. Eva sings well but overdoes it at times and is just a bit too forceful. The backing singers add a real depth to the sound and there is no question, this is instantly appealing and sailing into the final.”

ANDREW:
“This is an instantly catchy song and I was concerned by Eva’s potential live vocals.
But I had no need to fret as she is pretty faultless throughout. Some pyros at some key moments
of lovelyness just add to the overall impact along with the apricot stone opening up to reveal
a sprouting tree.”

Oikotimes.com

FOTIS
“Eva is accompanied by 3 backing vocals and a dancer. A sweet intro music makes you wanna smile and also think. Vocally Eva is very good but not sure if the backing vocals are heard properly. The orange lights in the refrain change into blue during the couple. Eva is dressed in gym forms and the composer is along with her on stage to guide the performance and stage presentation.”

EVA
“I cannot see what exactly many people love in this song… This girl is too tall and we saw a recent example (Montenegro 2009) which also didn’t do much. OK, diaspora will boost Armenia in the televoting but I am not sure the juries will support this entry, this year. The vocals are not bad at all but there is so much Armenian melancholy in the song, which brings us back to the same style we are used to since 2006. The same and the same again… why?”

“The five band members start off standing in line on the stage lit in blue. They are all wearing identical white shirts, black ties and checked trousers. The lead singer also has a grey waistcoat. They all have mike stands. Half way through the song the band members are brought multicoloured foam rubber instruments they play around with. The back screen has different colour patterns of dancing men on them. Towards the end the band huddle together in the middle of the stage before stripping off their trousers revealing shiny silver shorts they war underneath and we even get a crotch shot of the lead singer.
This fun number sets the second semi-final off and as this somehow reminds the successful 2006 Lithuanian entry it might well find enough fans to do well on the night.”

Allkindsofeverything.ie:

PETE:
”… The dancing men on the backdrop are actually quite effective as they are oftem mimicking the Incultos dance moves exactly … Overall, a good rehearsal, song does sound a bit repetitive though.”

KEITH:
“..The vocals are a bit dodgy with the lead singer missing out on some of the run throughs. For me this gets VERY repetitive after about a minute. If this was in semi one, it would have a strong chance but it’s no an opener and in this semi, I think it may miss out.”

Oikotimes.com

FOTIS
“Funky, happy, a great opening for the second semifinal. Not a song that will impress with vocals but will make everyone party as the second semifinal will kick off on May 27. InCulto are showing their passion and skills on stage. It reminds me the style of song, Lithuania sent in 2006 Eurovision and worked just fine for them. Will it be the same this year? I have a feeling they will go to the final although this semifinal has very strong entries.”

EVA
“The only positive thing I can see over this rehearsal is that these guys protest on stage for not having live music. I see the same presentation and outfits we saw in the national final of theirs. This effort of disco-funky never gave something in the scoreboard for countries attempting it (Lithuania 2001). I have to agree though as it will be happy opening for the second semifinal.”
