Club La Persé was founded in 2005 and has been organizing their own club in Helsinki ever since. They call themselves a collective of avantgardists, eccentrics and fashion freaks and have won many awards, including being named the best dressed group in Helsinki. In UMK 2017 we will see Mr C*nt, Jean Michelle, Miss Anti-Socialite Lili Butterfly Effective 2.0 and Ellen Vivan on stage. Their entry ‘My little world’ is written by Princess Julia.
We had a talk with Club La Persé before tomorrow’s big night.
Interview with Club La Persé
Why did you choose the name ‘Club la Persé’? [Perse means ass in Finnish].
Our name seems to have caused a lot of controversy The name was originally created over 10 years ago for our club night. Back in the day we were probably going for a provocative name. During the years it has become to represent way of thinking that things don’t always have to go through a certain plan. You are allowed to make mistakes. Life should not be taken too seriously. You should enjoy life and do things that makes you happy. It’s also a figure in Greek mythology.
The lyrics in ‘My little world’ have a sad and bleak feeling to it. Is the song based on a personal story? What is the message?
The lyrics of the song are by iconic dj, muse and original Blitz Kid Princess Julia. She wrote this song as a response to a sense of bleakness she was feeling at the time. It’s about a yearning to be loved, we all need to love and be loved & sometimes loneliness can be rather overwhelming. You think somebody or something can fill in the missing blanks but really the message is about looking within yourself.
We love your music video for ‘My little world’ – How did you come up with it and what is the story you want to communicate?
As a dj/club collective we wanted the location definitely to be a club which is our home and our own dear little world. The director Chrzu Lindström wrote the character focused script based on our vision. He also directed the video as his drag queen alterego Charlotte Moore. You can see him in the video among the party-goers. We wanted the video to be a ridiculous and FUN party for all. A camptastic rave up, a joyous mess of face paints, glitter and wigs that leaves a smile on your face after watching it. The perfect antidote to the January blues.
You have called your video “outrageously debauched” Are you planning on bringing some of the content to the stage in UMK?
The stage show is going to be something else all together. It’s going to be very fun, very us. Loads of things happening on stage. We are definitely at our best on a big stage. It’s going to be a spectacle. Not to forget killer heels, the outfits, makeup and wigs. Obviously.
In the video, we see lots of glittery make-up, wigs and amazing costumes: how important is Fashion to you? Do you design yourself?
We are all involved in fashion more or less through our work and private life. Ellen Vivan is also a fashion designer. Fashion is very important for us. It is life-enhancing and, like everything that gives pleasure, it is worth doing well. We have realized over the years that you do have a more interesting life if you wear impressive clothes. Also our make-up and hair team is the best in Finland. They are Elle Style Award winners and do fashion weeks in Milan, Paris, London and New York. We are bringing back the eurovision old school glamour with our final outfits. We don’t want to reveal too much yet… but you are going see well known designer’s showpieces on stage. Something that is rarely seen in Finland Eurovision (Umk).
Have you been following ESC? Do you have some favorite songs?
Yes, every year we are following Sweden’s Melodifestival because -as we all are aware- it’s on another level! We have mentioned Azucar Moreno’s Bandido from 1990 our all time favourite eurovision song. They had it all: great song, amazing style and fabulous choreography. Also we would like to mention Sergey Lazarev from last year, Gina G’s Ooh Aah… Just a Little Bit from 1996 and of course legendary Carola and Dana International.
